There was no doubt in this lady’s mind who was going to win.

THINK everyone got it wrong when it comes to the election result last night? Think again.

It turns out there was an entire segment of the America population who were accurate calling the election all the way through.

In the wash-up of what one commentator described as “the biggest upset in American political history”, I decided to go back and have a look at all the footage The Chaser collected in the closing weeks of the campaign.

What I uncovered was a treasure trove of comments that were accurately predicting a Trump victory weeks ago, providing insights that were seemingly outside the reach of the polling companies.

These were Donald Trump’s true believers.

Not only did the Trump fans predict the election outcome more accurately than any national polling organisation, pandit or political operative, they also provided some insight into why the election went the way it did.

As one woman put it at a Trump rally in Greensboro, North Carolina — “I’m very confident that the grassroots are going to rise up. And I really don’t trust the polls. I think the polls are rigged, and in that respect, trying to convince people that they shouldn’t bother to come out and vote. But I think it’ll have the opposite effect.

“The more people that think it’s going in Hillary’s favour, the more people are going to come out and vote for Trump.”

Of course, it is important to remember that last night more Americans voted for Hillary than for Trump. But Trump got the votes where it counted. Not in the big Democrat-dominated cities that are booming, but in the small towns and rural settings, that have been left out as the US economy has globalised.

What is fascinating is just how stark that division has become. Many of those we interviewed said they did not know a single Hillary Clinton supporter. One lamented that she did — they were “close family, and I just don’t get it. Don’t get it.”
