Queensland police have found chemicals believed to be used in the making of explosives at a home near a daycare centre at Ayr in the state's north.
The home on Brisbane Street and the Big Bird's Nest Child Care Centre have been evacuated.
Police have established an exclusion zone that includes Adelaide Street, Edward Street, Michael Street and Norham Road.
Inspector Tyler Crosby said police were executing a search warrant at the home and located a quantity of unknown chemicals.
"Specialist police have been called and are on scene to assist in the identification of the chemicals," she said.
"We're not sure what they are so until we can be assured that we know exactly what the chemicals are and what quantities are there then the area will remain closed.
"At this stage the risk is unknown."
Local woman Kimberley Ogden said she received a call from the child care centre asking if she could collect her son.
"The child care centre rang us about a quarter to three this afternoon letting us know that the CIB Ayr had requested that they evacuate the centre," she said.
"It's not something that we would come across very often.
"We just come and get him and then we were just told that there was an issue that the police would like to deal with."
Ms Ogden said she grew up in Ayr and could not recall an exclusion zone being set up in the town before.
"It's a bit interesting, shall I say. This is something I've never come across," she said.
Residents trying to get home are being turned away by police as the investigation continues.
