WHEN it comes to booze, the rule “everything in moderation” is a pretty good one to go by - and these before and after photos show us why.

Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to all manner of long-term health problems, including liver damage, cancers, heart problems, high blood pressure, which can lead to an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, and anxiety, reports The Sun.

Alcohol also has a range of short-term health effects, especially for heavy drinkers.

To put in into perspective, there are roughly 200 calories in a pint of beer; the same as in a large slice of pizza, and about 228 calories in a glass of wine — that’s as many calories as an ice cream.

Drinkaware recommends men and women only consume 14 units of alcohol per week — that’s six pints of beer or six glasses of wine.

It also says drinkers shouldn’t ‘save up’ their units and drink them in one go, instead it is best to spread them across the week.

Around one in five (18.2%) Australians over 14 drink at levels that put them at risk of alcohol-related harm over their lifetime according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
