FAMILY members of an Adelaide man killed in a road rage incident have told a court how his death has changed their lives forever with his ex-wife saying she has gone “through hell and backâ€.
Stuart James Oates, 63, was struck and thrown into the air as he crossed a road in Adelaide’s north in April 2014, his body landing 50m from the point of impact.
Colin Ivan Munn was chasing Damien Harold White in his car when White’s car hit Mr Oates, with both men found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. In a victim impact statement read to the District Court on Friday, Mr Oates’ ex-wife Elizabeth told Munn and White that they had no idea what the incident had done to her family.
“I have so much hate inside of me for both of you because of what you have done,†she said.
“I have gone through hell and back.†Ms Oates also expressed frustration that it had taken two and a half years for her family to “get justice†while other family members said their lives had been changed forever by “five minutes of angerâ€.
They said they could picture the incident, “picture his body lying on the roadâ€. Son Corey, who was 17 at the time, said the incident had scarred him for life. Having been told of his father’s death, he was driving home when he came across the accident scene.
There, he saw one of his father’s shoes lying on the road and “couldn’t stop shakingâ€.
“I will never see my father again because of an act of stupidity,†he said. Munn and White will return to court on December 15 for sentencing submissions.
