The Queensland government isn't seeing the funny side of clowning, warning police won't tolerate the "stupid and dangerous" craze.

Police Minister Bill Byrne on Tuesday underlined the minority Labor government's angry disapproval of the frightening "anti-social behaviour".

"People dressing up as clowns with the intent to scare is a dangerous and stupid notion and deserves outright condemnation," he said.

Mr Byrne said he understood Queenslanders had a robust sense of humour, but clowning went way too far.

"This behaviour is causing a huge concern.

"The last thing this state needs is our police resources to be wasted due to people running around dressed up as clowns intimidating and scaring people of our community."

With reports of clowns threatening schools and teenagers across the state, Mr Byrne also said education officials were working closely with police to help crack down on the practice.

"Principals will be taking a tough stance against any student found to be associated with these activities, and will be imposing disciplinary consequences in line with their school's Responsible Behaviour Plan," he said.

The police minister also criticised the US horror film series The Purge, which has sparked the craze, as disgraceful and said it "affronts all that egalitarian and inclusive Australia represents".
