A man is on the run after a violent home invasion on the Gold Coast.

The man, who was armed with a knife, entered the Ormeau home through an unlocked door and awoke a couple in their bedroom about 1:45am on Saturday.

The male resident then struggled with the intruder and was stabbed once in the stomach, Detective Sergeant Jay Notaro said at the scene.

The intruder then stole the woman's handbag and fled in the man's ute, which was parked in the driveway.

It was later found written off in Loganlea, crashed into two parked cars.

The 46-year-old male resident was taken to hospital with non-threatening injuries.

The intruder is described as 180cm tall, skinny build in his late 20s with short brown hair and a tattoo sleeve on his right arm.

"We ask for anyone who has information on this crime to contact Crime Stoppers," Detective Notaro said.
