SAN Francisco’s Civic Centre remains in lockdown as a gunman armed with a semiautomatic weapon is in a standoff with police.
The man, believed to be in his 40s,was threatening to harm people and himself, San Francisco Chroniclereports.
Police are currently at the scene trying to negotiate with the man after a SWAT team and the bomb squad were called to the United Nations plaza.
The gun-wielding man was reportedly seen holding the weapon outside City Hall, with authorities urging locals to “avoid the areaâ€.
“He may want to end his life. He may want to take out other people. And we don’t want that to happen,†San Francisco Police Department spokesman Carlos Manfredi told sfgate.com.
More than 100 police have surrounded the area, according to witnesses, including members of the FBI and Fire Department.
