An area in downtown Budapest has been cordoned off by police.

HUNGARY’S disaster management agency says that two people have been injured in an explosion at a ground-floor shop in downtown Budapest and have been taken to a hospital.

Police and rescue personnel cordoned off the area late Saturday near the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music.

The blast did not set off any fires at the scene.

Originally there was speculation on social media that the explosion could be related to the impending October 2 referendum on whether to accept the European Union’s mandatory quotas for immigrants. But police have now confirmed that it was a gas explosion.
