THE mysterious title of Lady Gaga’s long-awaited fifth record Joanne isn’t that cryptic after all.
Gaga announced today that the record will be released on October 21 and was named after her aunt who died from lupus when she was just 19.
The singer’s middle name is Joanne in her honour.
Gaga has said the record is completely autobiographical and her aunt’s influence on her life looms large in the music, as does spending time with her family in recent years since the release of 2013’s Artpop and her acting commitments for American Horror Story.
“As I returned to my home life and spending time with my friends and family and getting out of the mainstream limelight for a minute, what I realised is that the experiences of our family and our challenges and toughness make us who we are,†she told Apple Music.
“It’s everything about Joanne ... it’s all the toughness of the pain that happened as a result of losing her that made us all strong and made us all who we are.
“She is the woman of my past who is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman self into the future.â€
Mother Monster has revealed an all-star guestlist of collaborators with fans most excited to hear her duet with Florence Welch, a song called Hey Girl.
“Florence and I, when we were working together we laughed, we cried, we hugged each other,†she told Sirius FM earlier this week.
Another dance track with Beck emerged unexpectedly when the pair were hanging out at her Malibu pad.
She invited him to stay and jam the night away with her which resulted in the as-yet-untitled track.
“With Beck, who I made this great dance song with, we just hung out for an hour talking in Malibu talking, just shooting the breeze,†she said.
British producer Mark Ronson, who enlisted his Australian mate Kevin Parker from Tame Impala to co-produce and play on the record’s first single Perfect Illusion, has helped helm the project.
Other names attached to her musical family include original collaborator RedOne, who was her chief sonic architect in the early days, including on the smash hit debut single Just Dance.
Among the eclectic cast of characters whose names should appear on Joanne’s credits are Queens Of The Stone Age rock god Josh Homme, indie eccentric Father John Misty and disco legend Giorgio Moroder.
