THE grandmother photographed passed out on heroin in a car with her four-year-old grandson has been sentenced to 180 days in jail.
Rhonda Pasek, 50, appeared at East Liverpool Municipal Court in Ohio yesterday, where she pleaded no contest to child endangering, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and a seat belt violation.
Judge Melissa Emmerling sentenced Pasek to about six months jail and fined her $US280 — the maximum penalty under Ohio law, WKBN 27 reported.
Pasek and her boyfriend, 47-year-old James Lee Acord, were arrested on September 7 after they were found unconscious in the front seats of an SUV while the young boy sat in the back, staring blankly.
Acord was convicted on child endangering charges last week and was immediately sentenced to nearly one year in jail.
East Liverpool Police Department shared the infamous photo to illustrate the scourge of “the poison known as heroin.â€
Public Safety Chief Brian Allen was unapologetic about putting the photo on the city’s Facebook page, saying the public needs to see heroin’s destructive effects on abusers and their families.
“As a public official I can’t blur public records and this photo is a public record,†he said. “It’s all or nothing for us. We’re a government agency posting it. It’s not like we can willy-nilly do what we want.â€
He said the reaction to the photo has been “90 per cent positive, 10 per cent negative.â€
The boy’s mother, Reva McCullough, said she “bawled for four days straight†when she saw the horrifying image of her son. The stripper and former crack addict said she wants her son back.
“I don’t take drugs anymore. I haven’t even had a drink all night,†she told The Daily Mail. “Ironically, I have never taken heroin.â€
Pasek was awarded custody of the boy in July. Judge Thomas Baronzzi, who made the decision, said there was never any indication she was involved in drugs.â€
“Had I known (Pasek) was unreliable, I certainly wouldn’t have given her the child,†he told The Review.
The boy will live with his great-aunt and great-uncle in South Carolina.
