Meanwhile in Israel, a man from an Arab village in the north of the country has been indicted for fatally shooting his mother in a case of so-called “honour killing.â€
Spokeswoman Luba Samri says the 23-year-old man, a member of Israel’s Arab minority, shot his 46-year-old mother six times at close range in July.
Samri said on Thursday that the son suspected “his mother was behaving contrary to the accepted norms in their society.â€
Arab women in conservative Muslim communities have been murdered in the past by their relatives for conduct perceived as besmirching their family’s honour.
In many Muslim communities across the Middle East sex out of wedlock or even just dating is seen as a stain on the family reputation that can only be cleansed with blood.
