AN allegedly unrestrained two-year-old child was left in a critical condition last night after an horrific crash north of Melbourne.

The collision occurred when a Ford Focus T-boned a Daewoo on Roxburgh Park Drive in Roxburgh Park about 8pm.

The two-year-old, who was travelling in the Daewoo, was unconscious when paramedics arrived and in a critical condition.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said the toddler was also already out of the car by the time the ambulance got to the scene.

“We treated the boy and he was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.”

It is believed the boy’s injuries are now non life threatening.

Mr Bentley added the male driver of the Daewoo, aged in his 30s, was trapped in his car for over 30 minutes.

“He had back and abdominal injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

“There was another man assessed at the scene, but he was not taken to hospital.”

Sergeant Dean Pickering told 3AW this morning the child had been “thrown around” in the car during the collision, because the child was “not restrained”.

“One of the things of concern here was that initially, we didn’t even know that there was a child in the car,” Sgt Pickering said.

“Literally because the child had been thrown around, it was only a short time later that it was brought to our attention that there was a child in the car and unfortunately the child was in the foot well of the car, not restrained.”

Fawkner Highway Patrol are investigating.

It is understood the Daewoo pulled out of Matthews Crescent, with the intention of turning right into Roxburgh Park Drive.

The Focus — which was travelling toward the city and had only one male occupant aged in his 20s--- collided into the Daewoo when it pulled out — T-boning it.

Local police, Fawkner Highway Patrol and MCIU all attended the collision and the investigation continues.

Witnesses to the collision are to call Fawkner Highway Patrol on 9355 6139.
