A TWO-year-old boy left in a critical condition after an horrific crash north of Melbourne was “thrown around†the car when it was T-boned because he was travelling in the footwell and not a child seat, police say.
A Ford Focus hit the boy’s car, a Daewoo, on Roxburgh Park Drive in Roxburgh Park about 8pm.
The two-year-old was unconscious when paramedics arrived and in a critical condition.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said the toddler was out of the car by the time the ambulance got to the scene.
“We treated the boy and he was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.â€
It is believed the boy’s injuries are now non-life threatening.
Mr Bentley said the man driving the Daewoo, aged in his 30s, was trapped in his car for more than 30 minutes.
“He had back and abdominal injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
“There was another man assessed at the scene, but he was not taken to hospital.â€
Sergeant Dean Pickering told 3AW this morning the child had been “thrown around†in the car because the child was “not restrainedâ€.
“One of the things of concern here was that initially, we didn’t even know that there was a child in the car,†Sgt Pickering said.
“Literally because the child had been thrown around, it was only a short time later that it was brought to our attention that there was a child in the car and unfortunately the child was in the footwell of the car, not restrained.â€
Fawkner Highway Patrol are investigating.
It is believed the Daewoo pulled out of Matthews Crescent, intending to turn right into Roxburgh Park Drive.
The Focus - travelling into the city driven by a man aged in his 20s - hit the Daewoo side on.
Witnesses are urged to contact Fawkner Highway Patrol on 9355 6139.
