IN THE early hours of Thursday morning (AEST) the world will get its first glimpse of the new iPhone.
There has been a lot of ink given to what we can all expect from the new version of the company’s flagship product but there’s one likely feature that no one is talking about.
Apple likes to keep something up its sleeve for big product unveils and New York-based writer and filmmaker Adario Strange thinks he knows what it is.
Writing for Mashable, he laid out his rather convincing theory that Apple will follow Samsung and include a pencil or stylus with the iPhone 7 handset.
Back in June, the tech giant showed off a new messaging feature in iOS 10 which included “smart emojisâ€. Among other nifty things, the update allowed users to draw and hand write messages directly — demonstrated by company employees at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference.
“These weren’t smiley faces and hearts you draw on your Apple Watch with your finger, these were, at least in one case, fairly detailed graffiti drawings,†Mr Strange wrote.
“That was the first time I felt sure the Apple Pencil was coming to the iPhone. In fact, I’d be surprised if the person on the other end of that demo wasn’t already using the Apple Pencil on the iPhone.â€
That’s not the only evidence to suggest Apple will include a pencil with its new device.
An interview given by CEO Tim Cook in May confirmed the man at the helm of the world’s most valuable company is a big fan of what a stylus-like appendage can add to the user experience.
“If you’ve ever seen what can be created with that Pencil on an iPad or an iPhone, it’s really unbelievable,†he said during an interview with NDTV.
Apple released the larger “Plus†sized model with its iPhone 6 range and will continue to offer the larger option with the iPhone 7. So it makes perfect sense for it to now include a pencil for the iPhone after road testing it with the iPad Pro.
However the Apple Pencil has a price tag of $165 in the Australian Apple store, so hopefully the iPhone version will come included with the device.
“The Apple Pencil coming to Apple’s smartphone should really come as no surprise to those who have been watching the trajectory of the iPhone closely,†Mr Strange wrote.
WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT FROM THE NEW IPHONE
It is rumoured that the look and size of the new range of phones will be largely similar to the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
But the guts of the new device will receive an overhaul giving the handset superior processing power, better battery life and a better camera.
Most notably, the larger 5.5-inch version of the new phone dubbed the “iPhone 7 Pro†is rumoured to come equipped with a dual lens camera.
Improvements to the camera could likely be a main focus of Apple’s event tomorrow morning and the artwork featured on the event invitation seemed to support such a notion.
It showed a bunch of blurry colourful dots in a photography style called Bokeh which is associated with DSLR cameras. The effect would be achievable with a dual lens camera on the iPhone, and a few other smartphones on the market already boast such a capability.
Other rumours for the new device include a home button that sits flush on the screen and the disappearance of the antenna lines that run across the top and bottom of the rear of the device.
The expected change that has caused the most controversy, and even drawn criticism from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, is the removal of the headphone jack from the new iPhone to make way for a skinnier design.
APPLE WATCH AND OTHER PRODUCTS
The company is also expected to announce upgrades to the Apple Watch nearly a year and a half after the first generation was released.
The company has been shifting the functionality of the watch away from messaging and reports indicate upgrades will include a faster processor, a barometer and GPS radio for improved geolocation capabilities.
It is also possible Apple will announce new features for the Apple Mac or Macbook computer.
