WHEN Apple CEO Tim Cook launches the iPhone 7 tomorrow, it will be a case of the same iPhone you know but with more and less.

The more is expected to be a dual lens camera in the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus phablet and the less is the expected removal of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 range, something that will make the phones slimmer but will also mean people will be scrambling for an adaptor to plug in their favourite earphones.

There have been so many leaks in the past few months that it would be a genuine surprise if the iPhone 7 Plus did not have a dual lens camera. But what is still an unknown is exactly what the camera will do.

It could mean clearer pictures in a camera that works better in low light, with the camera able to match DSLR shooting abilities such as the bokeh light dots you get with a wide aperture, or it could be an optical zoom. Time, and Tim Cook, will tell.

The smaller iPhone 7 seems, according to the leaks, unlikely to get a camera to match the bigger phone but is still likely to be a step up from the previous model.

Optimal image stabilisation has always just been in the Plus model but that’s likely to be in the 4-7-inch phone too.

Those iPhone fans hoping for a new look for their favourite smartphone are set for disappointment.

The leaks suggest the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will have a similar form factor to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, aside from moving the antenna strip from the back of the phone, the addition of the extra lens in the bigger phone and a second speaker likely to replace the headphone port.

Some people have suggested that the iPhone 7 won’t be a hit with Apple fans because it will look too similar to the previous generation phone although that view defies the evidence.

The iPhone 6S is almost identical in looks to the iPhone 6 and Kantar figures out this week show the iPhone 6S is the world’s top-selling phone.

Apple is expected to release new headphones with the iPhone with some tipping a new style of wireless beats called AirPods, based on leaked reports of registered trade names ahead of today’s event.

Apple Insider (http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/09/06/apple-airpods-to-target-high-end-of headphone-market-with-custom-bluetooth-like-low-power-tech) cites Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who claims Apple will release AirPods that will use a new Bluetooth-like communication chip.

The AirPods, if they are released, are more likely to be a Beats labelled accessory with each iPhone coming shipped with headphones that connect through the Lightning port. Hopefully an adaptor for legacy headphones will also come with the iPhone and you won’t have to buy it

as an accessory.

The front of the iPhone 7 is set to be noticeably different. 9To5Mac (https://9to5mac.com/guides/iphone-7/) says the home button will be incorporated flush into the screen but will still give the feeling of being something you can press, with haptic feedback giving the impression of being indented using technology that’ seal ready on the MacBook and Apple Watch.

After years of calls falling on deaf ears, it seems likely this is the iPhone that will have a waterproof rating.

For anyone who has ever dropped their phone in the loo, jumped in a pool without emptying their pockets, or just doesn’t want to worry about being caught in subtropical downpours, a waterproof rating would be a dream come true — albeit a dream that Samsung users have been living for a while.

There is likely to be a new colour in the iPhone range which is good news if you like black, and Apple seems set to make 32GB, rather than the inadequate 16GB, the smallest size in the range.

Of course it’s not all going to be about iPhones.

Apple is expected to release the second generation of Apple Watch, with the addition of GPS making a far more useful watch for runners and cyclists.

We know there is iOS 10, currently in beta, coming to iPhones and iPads, WatchOS 3 is set to make the Watch far more useful, and macOS Sierra will be released.

But the exciting thing about Apple events is the possibility that there will be one more thing that nobody knows about.

There are a lot of predictions about new products but all will be revealed when the event kicks off at 3am Thursday AEST.
