A start to a new season saw Brisbane’s auction market spring into life with house sales topping reserves across the city.

Two neighbouring houses in Bardon sold above reserve price at a rare double auction which attracted 16 registered bidders and close to 70 onlookers.

The post-war homes had enticed developers, but it was two separate families who outbid the rest, with the homes selling for $775,000 and $790,000.

Ray White Toowong agent Dolor Milford said the double auction was “intense”.

“I’m speechless,” she said. “But what’s happened here is the properties have appealed to the market and it’s all come together.”

But the result was not good for everyone, with one of the tenanted families outbid by a Sydney phone bidder who had not yet seen the property.

“They [new owners] just got involved last week. They had their friends or relatives inspect it for them,” Ms Milford said. “They’re a family and they’ll be living in the home.”

Neighbouring number 93 was won by a local family who intend to renovate into a family home.

Lone bidder Clare Kenny, who had her partner on the phone, was in shock after winning the home.

“I’m overwhelmed; I can’t believe we’ve got it,” she said. “I just didn’t expect we’d be in the ball park for it.

“We missed out last week at an auction, so we came into this one with really low expectations, so I’m still in shock.”

In Corinda a large Queenslander home exceeded its reserve of $680,000 and sold for $744,000.

The deceased estate 100 Nelson Street had 14 registered bidders and was won by a family with four children who have intentions to renovate.

“The winning family had made an offer prior, but withdrew their offer, so I was surprised,” Ray White Toowong agent Sharon King said.

She said the turnout was proof “spring is here”.

“It was clear by how many people are out here today, and how many registered to bid,” she said. “I was hoping for at least 10 [registered bidders] so we exceeded that.”

Sellers and brothers Keith and Graham Wiggins said they were sad to see their parent’s home sell.

“I feel sad, very sad,” Mr Wiggins said after the auction. “It’s good to know that a family is going to do something with it and live in.”

And another home in Bardon exceeded expectations, with a huge $2.5 million sale under the hammer. Close to 100 people watched on as bids for 167 Simpson Road pushed from $1.5 million to its final selling price.

‘We are thrilled with today’s result, particularly given how much love and time we have put into this property,” seller Ms Brownhill said.

The property had 10 registered bidders.
