THE 80,000-plus supporters who backed the Big Energy Switch campaign will get an offer that could save them up to $500 on their electricity bills.
In NSW, the 28,000 households that backed the campaign will be offered a 25 per cent discount while Victorian backers will receive a 34 per cent discount.
South Australians will reap the benefits of a 20 per cent discount on their electricity bills while Queenslanders will get an 18 per cent reduction.
In NSW, the three in 10 campaign supporters who have solar panels will be offered 18 per cent off with Powershop, plus a retailer feed-in tariff of at least 7.2 cents per kilowatt hour and a $75 credit.
Victorian residents will get 34 per cent off also with Powershop, plus a retailer feed-in tariff of at least 7.2 cents per kilowatt hour. There is also a gas offer from Click Energy with a 19 per cent discount on the entire bill. That could save switchers as much as $245 a year.
Queenslanders get 17 per cent off also with Click, plus a retailer feed-in tariff of at least 6 cents per kilowatt hour. Alternatively, switchers can choose a 7 per cent discount with an 11c/kWh feed-in tariff.
South Australians will get 19 per cent off also with Click, plus a retailer feed-in tariff of 8 cents per kilowatt hour that is guaranteed for at least two years.
The exclusive deals have emerged seven weeks after News Corp Australia kickstarted the Big Energy Switch campaign by revealing new research showing more than a million NSW households are paying more for electricity than any other developed nation. Analysis by The Sunday Telegraph has since indicated that soaring wholesale electricity prices could lead to annual price increases of as much as $120 in two years.
Unlike up to 80 per cent of offers on the market, the Switch discounts are off the entire bill. Savings are usually on usage only.
And the benefits never expire. Again, this is uncommon, with the Australian Energy Market Commission recently warning that discounts tend to end after two years.
The 85,000 households to join the Big Energy Switch nationally had “moved the electricity market, and that’s no mean featâ€, said Joel Gibson, campaign director at One Big Switch which has run the campaign.
The winning deals were better than anything the provider had on the market.
“These offers will be very hard to beat, but if other providers respond, that’s a win for consumers everywhere,†Mr Gibson said.
“In Australia, we have some of the world’s highest power bills if we don’t shop around, but the gap between the good and the bad offers is widening, and you can save big if you do switch.â€
Households that had not joined could still get access to the offer by joining the Switch now, Mr Gibson said. There was no obligation on those who joined to take up the offer, nor was there any cost to join.
Mr Gibson said the winning offers were the deals that were best for supporters, not the ones that delivered the biggest commissions.
The exclusive offers would only be available for four weeks, he said.
