THE grieving parents of a baby boy who died days after he was sent home from two Perth hospitals and a doctor’s surgery say they want answers over his death.
Malakai Matui Paraone died in Princess Margaret Hospital on Friday.
The seven-month-old’s mother Nicole Thompson told Nine News she took her son to Midland Hospital last Monday with a fever, rash and restricted movement along the right side of his body.
She claimed she was then told her son was teething and had perhaps suffered a pulled elbow and was sent home.
By Tuesday, the boy’s condition had worsened and he was vomiting.
Ms Thompson called an ambulance to rush him to Princess Margaret Hospital where he was assessed and then sent home with panadol.
The family then turned to a Rockingham doctor on Wednesday.
Ms Thompson said Malakai was then diagnosed with a virus but they were told nothing could be done.
However the little boy’s condition worsened and he was rushed to PMH again on Thursday.
He was put into intensive care within hours.
While he was on life support, Ms Thompson said doctors told them Malakai was suffering from meningococcal.
The couple and their other son were then given antibiotics as a precaution, Nine reported.
But when they told doctors they had been turned away days earlier, the couple claim the diagnosis was changed.
Doctors then said their seven-month-old son had blood poisoning from a throat infection.
The couple have vowed to fight for answers.
“Three days I tried to get him help — three days, two hospitals, one doctor’s surgery, an ambulance trip,†Ms Thompson told Nine News.
“If they had done their job properly my son would still be here.
“I really do feel like going to that Midland hospital and saying ‘You know how you laughed at me for asking those questions, well my son passed away.â€
PMH and Midland Hospital told Nine they were unable to comment on individual patient’s cases and the matter would be investigated by the coroner.
A Go Fund Me page has been set up in Malakai’s honour.
