PRESIDENT John F Kennedy was assassinated in an inside job by a member of his own security team, according to an astonishing “deathbed confession†made to film director Oliver Stone.
The man, who was a member of the president’s protection staff, is said to have contacted Stone after he had finished making his acclaimed 1991 film JFK, reports The Sun.
The man was dying of cancer when he allegedly told the film director “a secret he had only shared with his son†— that JFK was killed when “somebody from his own team … had fired on the presidentâ€.
He gave only the codename “Ron†when he reached out to Stone in a series of letters before the pair actually met in a New York hotel, the Mail Online reports.
Stone has since said he was sceptical about the claim as there have been dozens of conspiracy theories about JFK’s death, but now believes his story is “plausible†and “very authenticâ€.
The Oscar-winning director revealed the details of the “deathbed confession†for the first time in a discussion with Matt Zoller Seitz, who wrote a book about him which is due for release next month.
Stone said: “He said he didn’t want money or recognition.
“He said something like, ‘I want you to know this is from my conscience’.â€
He adds: “The scenario he laid out was very practical.
“It’s the way I would do it, if (I) were going to do something like that.
“You kill the president, and your cover is security, and if the sniper or snipers who kill the president are hidden in with the guys who are supposed to protect him, guys who have no knowledge of this plot … it makes a lot of sense.
“And his memory of it was so technical, filled with military jargon, details about radio communications right after the shots.â€
JFK was killed by two rifle bullets while travelling in an open limousine in Dallas, north Texas, in November 1963.
Lee Harvey Oswald was accused of murdering JFK after firing from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository.
He was shot dead himself two days later by a local nightclub owner connected to the criminal underworld.
The Oliver Stone Experience will be released on September 13 and has been published by Abrams and Chronicle books.
