IF YOU are the type of person who hates getting stuck at traffic lights, it might be time to upgrade to an Audi.
The German luxury carmaker announced select cars from its 2017 line-up will be fitted with the Audi Connect system — a new tech using in-car 4G internet to receive real-time information from traffic light control centres.
This means a cloud-computer-connected countdown timer for red lights will be displayed on the instrument panel and heads-up display of vehicles.
Audi’s general manager for connected vehicles Pom Malhotra said the technology will enhance “vehicle navigation, engine start/stop functionality and can even be used to help improve traffic flowâ€.
By implementing the technology, Audi hopes to be able to account for traffic light timing to divert drivers to a more efficient route to their destination.
Furthermore, it could tell drivers when to accelerate to ensure they make it through the traffic light while it is green.
As government agencies already collect information from traffic signals and road sensors, the communication of these cars may also help adjust traffic patterns based on how many cars are approaching or are stuck at a red light.
The feature is currently only available on Audi Q7, A4 and A4 allroads models across “selected cities†in America.
Audi has not said if it has plans to introduce the same technology in Australia.
