A FRIEND of an Australian man who died after falling from a hotel balcony in Bangkok has ruled out suicide.
Joshua Beath, 25, was found naked in a pool of blood by a maid at the Surawong Road hotel in the Thailand capital on July 29.
The circumstances around his death remain a mystery, but it is believed he checked into the hotel with a Thai woman the day before he died.
She had left the hotel by the time the police had arrived.
Mr Beath’s friend Chris Vargas, who met him in 2008, told news.com.au the Melbourne man had a Thai girlfriend but it is unknown if she was with him when he fell from the balcony.
It is not suggested she has anything to do with Mr Beath’s death.
Ms Vargas said she had many questions about her friend’s death.
“I don’t think he could have committed suicide, he was not that kind of person. He loved life and was very positive and enthusiastic about life in general,†she said.
“And because the body was found naked ... who commits suicide when naked? It’s nonsense.â€
Ms Vargas said Mr Beath had been with his girlfriend, who she had never met, for a number of years.
“It was an on and off relationship, that’s what I know,†she said.
Ms Vargus questioned whether the hotel had CCTV footage of Mr Beath checking in, to determine who the Thai woman with him was.
She said he was also travelling with friends and wondered if they had been drinking before his death.
Ms Vargus also questioned whether or not Mr Beath argued with his girlfriend.
“I’ve been asking Joshua’s cousins and friends as well and I also read some news about it,†she said.
“And I feel so bad when they tell me we will probably never know what happened to him. Then I feel frustrated.â€
Ms Vargus did not know exactly what Mr Beath’s plans were while he was in Thailand, but it’s believed he intended to stay in the country for a month.
“Four days before travelling to Thailand, he told me he was going there again, he really loved it,†she said.
“I don’t know what he was doing there exactly — if he wanted to see different places or be with his Thai girlfriend or help poor people — but I know he enjoyed it.â€
The Surawong Road hotel confirmed to news.com.au a death had occurred but could not go into further detail.
According to The Australian, there were no signs of a struggle in Mr Beath’s room or any suggestions the man was a victim of a crime.
Another friend said Mr Beath had travelled to Thailand at least half a dozen times and said everybody who knew him was shocked by his death.
Mr Beath’s friend Jorden Harris set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to help bring his body back to Australia.
Almost $25,000 was raised by Monday and a flood of tributes were left on the crowd-funding page.
It is understood the page has since been deactivated.
Kelly Plunkett, who met Mr Beath in Thailand last year, said they kept in contact and planned to meet again in November.
They had spoken only two weeks ago and she described him as a “lovely†boy.
According the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 146 Australians died in Thailand in 2013-14.
A department spokesman said it was providing consular assistance to Mr Beath’s family.
“Due to privacy considerations, we are unable to provide further information,†the spokesman said.
News.com.au contacted Mr Beath’s family but they did not wish to comment.
In an obituary published in the Herald Sun, family members spoke of their grief at losing Joshua in what they described as an accident.
“A piece of our family puzzle has been tragically taken and cannot be replaced. Words cannot describe how Josh touched all our hearts and everybody he met,†the notice read.
“We will miss your cheeky grin and your humorous intellect and huge heart.â€
