Russian Andrei Soroker has found himself in the middle of the Census drama.

ANDREI Soroker is laughing at the irony.

Born in Russia, where he says their version of the Bureau of Statistics is referred to “as a laughing stock and the most corrupt, most illegitimate of all Russian agencies”, he’s found himself in the middle of Australia’s Census fail.

“There’s so many jokes about the Russian version of the Bureau of Statistics that I thought it was hilarious I ended up inheriting the moniker for Australians,” he told news.com.au.

Overnight, Mr Soroker began receiving a flood of Twitter notifications from angry Australians detailing their rage over the shut down of the Census website.

Why? Because his handle is no other than ...@abs.

“I always get them (messages), for years I’ve been getting them, but not to the degree as tonight,” he said from his residence in West Oakland, California, which he now calls home.

“It became funny and noticeable because a substantial portion of Australians are tweeting me instead of the Australian Bureau of Statistics.”

Mr Soroker, the CEO of a business communication tool called sameroom.io, has had so many tweets mistakenly sent to him that he’s been forced to put on his profile, “Not Australian Bureau of Statistics” — not that it has helped.

“I put it on my bio a long time ago, but now I see people legitimately pissed off, people are attacking me by accident.

“It’s died down a little but every time I open my phone there are notifications.”

He says he knew little about the Census before last night but “I appreciate them (tweets), they’re always interesting, I ended up reading a number of articles about it.

“I’m enjoying it a lot.”

For the record, the real handle for the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census is @ABSCensus.
