Eastlake Football Club have won a stake in a grass roots grant which will be used to buy new guernseys for the club's women's and youth girls teams.Â
The annual Sydney Swans and Volkswagen grassroots grant competition allows 10 clubs from around Australia to win $1000 each to promote their grassroots programs, and Eastlake were the only ACT club to win.
The grant is an initiative which will help Eastlake allocate money to their womens' game.
"At any level, if you're able to get some support from the AFL clubs and their sponsors, it certainly goes a long way to help continue to develop grass roots football around the country," Eastlake football manager Stephen Soulsby said.
"Anything we can do to continue to promote the game and promote women's footy in particular is always a bonus."
The Eastlake women's side is first on the AFL Canberra ladder with an imposing 10-1 win-loss record as they aim to defend their premiership.
Eastlake have won eight premierships since the competition started in 1998 and the club's mix of experience and youth-talent will likely see them continue their dominance into the future.
"They're hoping to go back-to-back this year. We've got girls who have played over a number of years who are very experienced, then we've got a group who are relatively new to the game and are just trying to develop their skills," Soulsby said.
"It's a really good combination from a club perspective to have."
The Eastlake women's side plays the Riverina Lions next weekend at Kingston Oval.
Meanwhile in the AFL Canberra men's first grade competition, Queanbeyan Tigers kicked 18 goals on their way to a 120-point drubbing of the Gungahlin Jets on Friday night.
The match moves Queanbeyan into equal second with Belconnen.
