Coles Supermarket AustraliaSupermarket shelves have been stripped bare of fresh produce as supermarket giant Coles begins to feel the effects of strike action at a Victorian cold storage warehouse.

Farmers are also worried they could fall victim to collateral damage as truckloads of produce are turned away as the strike reaches its fourth day.

More than 600 Polar Fresh workers are picketing outside the Truganina warehouse, as the union negotiates a pay agreement with the company.

The strike began on Tuesday and National Union of Workers spokeswoman Emma Kerin says the strike action could continue over the weekend if both parties can’t agree on a deal.

She said union officials met company representatives for eight hours on Thursday and would return to the negotiating table on Friday.

“The best-case scenario is that we will have an offer for the workers to vote on – otherwise, the action could continue,” Kerin told AAP.

She said the union would likely brief workers on Friday afternoon.

Farmers expect to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result of the blockades.

“We hope to see this dispute resolved soon to ensure that growers aren’t left wearing serious financial losses as a consequence of other parties’ industrial disputes,” AUSVEG spokesman Shaun Lindhe said.

Coles and Polar Fresh on Tuesday applied for court orders against the union over the strike.

Justice Michael McDonald ordered the workers to stop the picket action by midday Thursday at the latest, and the matter would be revisited on Monday.

Coles has been contacted for comment.
