A WESTERN Australian fisherman had a close encounter of the weird kind when he found an odd and unnerving object floating in the Indian Ocean.
Smooth and fleshy, white and pink and as big as a boat it bobbed on the water, unlike anything he’d seen before.
Perhaps it was another vessel or even a hot-air balloon?
It was only when Mark Watkins got closer to the bizarre object that he worked out it wasn’t some kind of alien species, but a huge monster of the deep.
“When we got closer we realised it had to be a dead whale because of the smell,†Mr Watkins told the West Australian.
He was out fishing with his dad off the coast near Bunbury when he made the gruesome discovery on Wednesday.
“It‘s stomach was full of gas so it was all bloated up,†he said.
Sharks were circling his boat, Mr Watkins said, and seemed to be ignoring the rotting carcass.
But by the time the pair headed back to shore the sharks seemed to have caught the fishy whiff and had taken some bites of the whale, in the process deflating the body.
