BEHOLD the Bourbon Burgel.
Just when you thought burgers couldn’t get any more extreme, the food gods have answered our prayers with a part drink/part meal miracle.
Sydney food chain Chicken & Sons has combined three of our favourite things starting with the letter B, to make one over-the-top calorie creation.
Burger, bacon ... and bourbon.
Dubbed the Bourbon Burgel, the creation is the brainchild of Chicken & Sons owners Adam Spencer and Mark VanderGoot, who said the idea came from a light bulb moment in the middle of the night.
“We are always playing around with burger specials and ideas,†Mr VanderGoot told news.com.au.
“Adam woke up in the middle of the night and had a great idea for a burger, he called me the next morning at 7am and the Bourbon Burgel was born the next day.â€
Filling a part sesame-seed bagel and burger bun with an angus beef pattie, Yankee cheese, pickles, special sauce, bourbon glazed bacon, jalapeños, house bourbon barbecue sauce, extra bourbon glazed bacon and a shot of Bulleit Bourbon — the $22 meal also comes with a side of fries.
“We can’t cook enough of them, we have had queues out the door,†Mr VanderGoot said.
“We have a good relationship with our baker, so our buns come with a hole in the middle which is just big enough for a shot glass.
“The bacon is marinated in bourbon, and the burger is basically a classic American cheeseburger.
“It’s a Good Friday or Saturday night meal. To eat it right, you have to shot the Bourbon, eat the marinated bacon then have the burger, because I think drinking the bourbon during the meal is a little overpowering.â€
This isn’t the first time Chicken & Sons has played with bourbon in their food.
“We had played around with spirits in our food before,†he said.
“We did a Lemmy burger with Jack Daniels at the Bald Faced Stag in Leichhardt and it was a great success.â€
That version used Jack and Coke glazed bacon, as well as a Jack Daniels barbecue sauce.
American fast food chain Carl’s Jr and Denny’s diner have both dabbled in bourbon burgers, but not to the extent of the Chicken & Sons version.
In 2013, Carl’s Jr. rolled out the Jim Beam Bourbon Burger, which just had a lashing of Jim Beam bourbon sauce. Denny’s basically rolled out the same thing.
But Mr VanderGoot and his business partner said the Burgel was something they hadn’t seen before, and will have it on their menu for some time to come.
“People are really loving it,†Mr VanderGoot said.
“We have seen pictures of it popping up all around the world.â€
Mr VanderGoot said the move to include a shot of bourbon in the burger wasn’t to take on and challenge other chains, rather it was an attempt at “tossing the boat†in what has become a popular market.
“We are a little different, we aren’t just burgers,†he said.
“A large part of our business model is sides and charcoal smoked meats and chicken. We aren’t burger cooks, but for us — burger demand keeps increasing week on week, and I think it’s because they please a lot of people.â€
So far the restaurant has sold a couple hundred burgers but unlike other gimmicky menu items, the Bourbon Burgel, which goes for $22, will be a permanent menu item at the Bald Faced Stag in Leichhardt and the Whitehorse in Surry Hills.
