Caledonia Investments executive chairman Mark Nelson and wife Louise have bought into Melbourne’s most revered tower of power. They have spent $2.41 million buying an apartment at 99 Spring Street through Kay & Burton. It last sold at $755,000 in 1994, when the Frenkel family bought well given the 24th floor apartment had fetched $1.22m five years prior. The Nelsons have owned on Seven Shillings Beach at Point Piper in Sydney since 2010, when they bought from Nigel Butler, heir to the Butler and Norman bottle merchants fortune, for $17.3m through McGrath. They’d previously had a two-year lease over the nearby, as yet unsold, Fairfax family residence, Elaine. The Nelsons took over the Elaine lease from Cameron O’Reilly, the former media player who has just listed his redundant Top of the Town, Darlinghurst penthouse through Alison Coopes. Overlooking the Sydney CBD, the penthouse (featured on the cover of today’s Mansion Australia magazine) last traded in 2007 when bought from the Sutton car dealership family. O’Reilly, son of media magnate Tony O’Reilly, faces likely competition from MONA founder David Walsh’s Horizon penthouse offering.
Templestowe and behold
Director Gordon Han Yan has listed his luxury home in newly urbanised Templestowe. Yan paid $1.4m in 2010, commissioning Dubai-based architect Jonathan Merin to design the opulent five-bedroom property. The study overlooks the double-height billiards room which features a black glass-topped wet bar, customary crystal chandelier and wine cellar. Set on 4014sq m, the home comes with pool, tennis court and its own tailored putting green and bunker. There’s also an outside stone-surround ethanol fire pit. The property, replete with its triple car garage has a price guide of over $5.5m, but Marshall White agent Marcus Chiminello suggests they are hoping for $6m-plus.
Ex-Coles chief hopes to clean up
Former Coles boss John Fletcher and wife Noela have listed their Gold Coast penthouse on pricey Hedges Avenue. The couple have owned the apartment since 2007, when they paid $6.7m. Spread over two levels in “Hedges 252â€, the 758sq m, four-bedroom apartment has views over Mermaid Beach. The apartment, including a private roof terrace with a pool and spa, is listed with Harcourts Coastal agent Tolemy Stevens. Fletcher is best known for running Coles from 2001 to 2007 before it was acquired by Wesfarmers. He famously said he had not been in a supermarket for 25 years just before he took the top position. Fletcher was recently appointed chairman of ports operator DP World Australia.
Caltex boss drops price
Having bought at Noosaville, Caltex chairman Greig Gailey and his sociologist wife Geraldine Lazarus have reduced the asking price for their Sunshine Beach holiday home. Previously seeking $3.4m through Sam Plummer and Karen Bester at Dowling & Neylan Real Estate, the home now comes with a $3.2m guide. The Toorak couple paid $2.55m in 2009 for the Gabriel Poole-designed beach house.
