A police officer has been stood down after being charged with assault while performing a traffic stop in South Hedland.

The 41-year-old senior constable, who worked at the South Hedland police station, is accused of assault and assault occasioning bodily harm after the incident in January, authorities say.

It's understood the charges relate to two people.

He will appear in the South Hedland Magistrates Court on August 27.

The officer is the latest in a series of other incidents involving officers from South Hedland and Port Hedland.

One officer has been stood down after allegedly waving a firearm at his colleagues whilst drunk earlier this month, and another has been charged with drink-driving after he allegedly crashed into a police car in May.

Another three police officers at Port Hedland were stood aside for allegedly verbally abusing two teenagers and dropping them off on the outskirts of the town.
