WHEN one is not inspecting one’s own squadron of jet fighters, an afternoon of duck, duck, goose is becoming routine for royal cutie, Prince George and his lookalike little sister Charlotte.
A week on from the tiny prince’s first official engagement playing pilot with dad, William and proud mum, Kate, the Cambridge kids returned to their relatively normal life at Kensington Palace — which now regularly includes scooter rides in the park with their mum; daily walks with Mary Poppins nanny, Maria, and picnic play dates at the polo.
Living the imaginative and loving legacy of their late grandmother, Diana, who balanced raising her royal sons for a life of service, with sneaky trips to burger bars and fun parks, Will and Kate are showing their determination to stay hands-on and down-to-earth with their children, even as they both step up their royal workloads.
While their privilege is apparent in the gilt halls of the young family’s two stately homes — Anmer Hall, their country pile in Norfolk and the newly-renovated Apartment 1A in the Kensington Palace compound — it’s been Kate who has made sure they have her commoner’s touch.
With plans in place for two parties to celebrate George’s third birthday next week (one with his “nannyâ€, Queen Elizabeth at her summer home, Balmoral), it is expected to be a simple affair — right down to a paper crown for the toddler and home made cakes by his mum.
The Cambridges were all spotted recently scoffing chocolate cake from paper plates with friends at a horseshow — an activity not likely to have been on the menu for their regal ancestors..
Despite being teased by her husband about her cooking skills, or lack thereof, Kate is understood to take her home duties seriously, serving up a Sunday roast each week and gifting her royal relatives with jars of homemade jam.
She is again expected to get behind the camera and produce the official birthday portrait of the little prince; as she did for daughter Charlotte.
While her mother Carole Middleton is known to lavish her grandchildren with expensive toys, including a $15,000 rocking horse, “Georgie†(his parents’ pet name for their son) is said to be scoring a new Bolonka Swetnas breed of puppy — a new ball of fluff to play alongside the family’s beloved cocker spaniel Lupo and hamster, Marvin.
London eyes will be peeled for the pup, with the Duchess most often spotted taking Lupo for his daily walk, pushing Charlotte in her pram and George on his scooter around Kensington Park. A kids playground, dedicated to the memory of Diana and the family’s doorstep, is also said to be a favourite haunt.
