MORE than 100 “coup plotters” have been killed after a rejected bid to bring down the Turkish government.

“The coup attempt has been foiled,” acting army chief General Umit Dundar said.

Dundar said the coup attempt “was rejected by chain of command immediately”.

Soldiers had surrendered after the military staged an attempted coup that left 161 people dead - including 47 civilians, 41 police officers and two soldiers, with at least 1154 injured.

Dundar said 104 people described as “coup plotters” had been killed.

About 1500 military personnel were detained in a night of violence across Turkey, a senior Turkish official said.

The majority of those killed were civilians and most of those detained are soldiers in the Turkish capital of Ankara, the official said.

Soldiers raided the offices of CNN-Turk forcing the station to shut down. It has since returned to air. And pictures are emerging showing the Turkish Parliament was bombed.

Flights to Turkey have been diverted and departures from Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport have been cancelled.

TV footage showed people running for cover as shots rang out over Bosphorus Bridge.

Reuters reports tanks opened fire near the Turkish parliament building, and Agence France-Presse reported Turkish F-16s shot down a helicopter carrying “coup plotters”.

“The power in the country has been seized in its entirety,” said a military statement read on
