A woman is fighting for life after being shot in the face with a spear gun in Hallam, in Melbourne's south-east.

Emergency services were called to the home on Cornwall Street about 11:30pm.

The woman in her 40s had been pierced in the face with the spear.

She was taken to the Alfred Hospital with critical injuries.

Police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and said a man in his 40s was assisting them with their enquiries.
