Sydney has just experienced a perfect winter's weekend, with sunny conditions and the temperature reaching into the high teens.

But it won't last, with a low pressure system developing on Tuesday bringing rain, strong and chilly winds and large seas.

Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said that Wednesday in particular looked "pretty gusty" with winds up to 90km/h along the NSW coast.

"It's probably a good idea to tie down the trampoline," Ms Westcott said. "It's not going to be all that nice for some people."

While the Bureau of Meteorology predicts a top of just 16 degrees for Wednesday, Ms Westcott said to prepare for even colder temperatures.

"It will feel a lot cooler when the wind is that strong."

Monday morning was particularly chilly in the city, reaching a low of 6.6 degrees at 6am, which is 2 degrees below average for July.

Taking into account the wind chill, it felt more like 3.6 degrees at the time, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Camden reached a low of -1.8 degrees at 6am on Monday, while Richmond hit a low of -0.8 degrees at 5am.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said that from Tuesday to the weekend, Sydney should get between 25 and 50 millimetres of rain, with the potential for some suburbs, particularly in the city's east, to pick up 60-80 millimetres.

Along with the strong winds on Wednesday and Thursday, the surf will become dangerously large, peaking on Thursday and Friday, before the low pressure system moves away.

Mr Dutschke said the most intense rain, wind and waves would be on the NSW South Coast. More than 200 millimetres of rain, winds gusting over 100km/h and seas higher than five metres are all possible there.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the low pressure system should clear with another mostly fine weekend ahead.

A top of 19 degrees is forecast in the city on Saturday and 20 degrees on Sunday, with a possible shower forecast for both days.

"For Sydney, Saturday looks great and most of Sunday looks pretty good too," Ms Westcott said.
