A 43-year-old Ascot Vale man alleged to have stabbed a stranger with a bottle after randomly knocking on the door of his public housing flat has been released pending further enquires.

Victoria Police said the incident occurred in Ascot Vale in the early hours of Thursday morning.  They interviewed the man on Thursday afternoon.

"It's alleged a man was struck with a bottle by another man at a home in Ascot Street about 4.30am," Acting Senior Sergeant Kris Hamilton said.

"It is understood the alleged offender had knocked on numerous doors of the flats in the building, and the victim opened his door.

"An altercation took place, and the victim was assaulted."

Acting Senior Sergeant Hamilton said the 40-year-old victim had been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"Police arrested a 43-year-old Ascot Vale man nearby. He is currently assisting with inquiries," Acting Senior Sergeant Hamilton said.

It is believed the two men are not known to each other.

Victoria Police media officer Creina O'Grady said the man was currently in custody.

"He is expected to be interviewed later this morning," Ms O'Grady said.
