IN case you haven’t heard there’s a cold snap ahead and it’s going to go from cool to downright freezing quicker than you can say Antarctic blast.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned cold damaging winds, snow, and hail are set to hit the south and eastern parts of the country as a cold front sweeps across southeast Australia.
The front is expected to move eastwards later today and has already brought snow to Alpine areas as well as parts of Tasmania.
It is expected to really bite in Victoria from today and ACT and NSW from tomorrow.
But it’s not just the southern parts of the country which will feel the cold.
The Bureau of Meteorology said it was possible snow could fall as far north as Queensland’s Great Dividing Range in the Darling Downs.
In NSW, areas west of the ranges including Orange could also cop a dusting as well as the Blue Mountains’ town of Katoomba.
Snow is also predicted to fall in Oberon and across the Barrington Tops.
In South Australia, the BoM said it was possible snow could also fall on the Mt Lofty Ranges.
A severe weather warning has also been issued for damaging winds and heavy rainfall in southern parts of the state.
Meanwhile NSW won’t be spared from the big chill.
In Sydney, the mercury will struggle to reach 16C across the weekend and 15C on Monday with lows of just 7C overnight.
But that’s nothing in comparison to those in Melbourne with the city set to be hit by ice cold winds tomorrow, with the mercury predicted to struggle into double digits.
The cold front over the Southern Ocean will reach western parts of Victoria as early as this afternoon before crossing central areas of the state early this evening and tomorrow.
Across the Alpine areas of both Victoria and NSW, the mercury is set to plunge to as low as -7C over the weekend.
In NSW, the BoM has warned that northwesterly winds will increase ahead of the cold front which expected to cross southeast of the state later today or early tomorrow.
It has warned damaging winds of 90km/h will hit the Snowy Mountains, including Mount Ginini, Perisher Valley, Charlotte Pass, Thredbo, Cabramurra and Selwyn, and parts of the ACT above 1500m.
At 10am this morning, the BoM tweeted that Thredbo recorded a mean windspeed of 74km/hr.
A spokeswoman for Perisher said strong winds had already hit the region and that more snow was on the way.
“There are snowy and windy conditions through our four resort areas of Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes and Guthega today as the storm continues to deliver, with more snow in the forecast for the next few days,†she said.
The resort has recorded 18cm of snow in the past week.
The big chill has already hit Tasmania with snow already dusting Mt Wellington in Hobart.
The BoM has also issued warnings to residents with heavy rain also hitting as the cold front passes across the state.
The cold weather has been great news for the country’s ski resorts which have been blanketed in a thick layer of snow overnight as a cold air mass moved in from the south.
Resorts have already been hit with between 10 and 20cm of falls with up to 50cm of snow expected in some areas in the next few days.
