AN elderly farmer will die in jail after being sentenced for the murder of a NSW environment officer during a routine departmental visit.
Ian Turnbull, 81, will serve a minimum 24-year jail term for callously gunning down Glen Turner, 51, on July 29, 2014.
The farmer had used a hunting rifle to murder Mr Turner, who was on public land with a colleague near the farmer’s NSW property.
Turnbull was today sentenced in the Supreme Court after being found guilty of murder following a five-week trial in May.
Justice Peter Johnson jailed him for a maximum of 35 years with a non-parole period of 24 years for the murder and for detaining a colleague of the victim for advantage.
Considering the man’s age, Justice Johnson said the 24-year jail term “will almost certainly constitute a de facto life sentence with the offender dying in custodyâ€.
