IN THE world of fashion, there’s a new must-have accessory du jour, and yes, it’s yet another item out of the reach of mere mortals.

It’s motherhood, but in an upgraded, photogenic format — as depicted in the pages of a glossy fashion mag.

It seems there’s no self-respecting fashionista who hasn’t been shot with her photogenic progeny. Jerry Hall was snapped with daughter Georgia Jagger for Elle Brasil, Miranda Kerr was captured with son Flynn for Vogue Australia, Nicole Trunfio famously breastfed her son Zion on the cover of Elle last year, and Cindy Crawford posed with her teen look-a-like Kaia Gerber for Vogue Paris earlier this year.

Even the Victoria’s Secret supermodels are getting in on the act.

Kate Moss and daughter Lila Grace Moss Hack are the latest mother-daughter duo to grace a cover, starring in Vogue Italia’s July edition.

Long gone are the days that Moss kept her daughter out of the spotlight — the 13-year-old was captured with her uber-model mother by Mario Sorrenti, who just happens to be Moss’s ex boyfriend. The photographer helped kickstart her ascent to the top of the modelling game when Moss herself was still a teenager, just a few years older than Lila Grace is now.

Vogue Australia editor Edwina McCann says shooting models and their kids works for the reader, and more crucially, magazine sales.

“You get something different from the subject when their children are around,” she says.

“People are fascinated with seeing mothers with children in any context, and certainly beautiful women who they’ve seen photographed repeatedly— those images really resonate with people.”

McCann — who was on set with Kerr and her son Flynn for Vogue — admits that when these images are used on covers, sales spike, but there are caveats.

“I wouldn’t be comfortable doing it just because I thought it was going to sell the magazine. Never has it been prearranged in my experience — Miranda wasn’t prearranged. You’re always arriving on set unsure of whether or not children will be involved — it has to be that they’re comfortable as the day unfolds.

“In that case, I know that Miranda had to check with Orlando (Bloom) and we would want both parents to agree that it’s OK.”

There’s no doubt that for some models, the photographs are also a way of creating a fashion dynasty.

When Cindy Crawford and daughter Kaia Gerber graced the April cover of Vogue Paris, it was a case of Crawford handing on the baton to her 14-year-old, who has already shot campaigns for Versace and Alexander Wang.

McCann says the teen will benefit from her mother’s veteran supermodel status.

“The fact that they’re a known name to begin with gives them an immediate kickstart, so they’re going to become superstars quite early.

“Especially in the case of Cindy Crawford, she’s very experienced in the industry and respected.

“Gerber’s going to be protected from any exploitation — Crawford knows the deal, so that’s a huge advantage as well.”
