AUTHORITIES say a mother was forced to fight off a cougar, otherwise known as a mountain lion, that attacked her five-year-old son in Colorado on Friday night.
Police told ABC-7 that the boy had been playing outside around 8pm (10am AEST) when the cougar attacked.
The said the boy’s mother ran outside when she heard screaming and removed her son from the animal. The boy’s face, head and neck had been injured.
Authorities told the TV station the boy was being transported to a Denver hospital in fair condition.
The mother hurt her hand and legs but has been released from the hospital.
Authorities found and killed acougar in the front yard of the home about 16 kilometres northwest of Aspen.
There have been three fatal cougar attacks in Colorado since 1991.
It comes in the same week in which two-year-old Lane Graves was taken and killed by an alligator at Disney World while he was wading in the water.
