THE tobacco king playboy who lives a life as “Australia’s Hugh Hefner†could be about to lose his bunnies after a court found he had engaged in commercial skulduggery.
With a collection of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Rolls Royces, Travers Beynon calls himself The Candyman and throws parties the Playboy founder would envy.
Surrounded by buxom, scantily-clad girls spends his days at his palatial $3.7 million “Candy Mansion†on the Gold Coast.
But a court has found Beynon’s Cigarette and Gift Warehouse, that operates as Freechoice Australia engaged in deceptive conduct while poaching rival tobacconists from rival TSG.
A former employee earlier told the court today Beynon’s company, at his direction, actively encouraged TSG franchisees to break contracts and sign up with him.
“Free Choice do not have any respect for the legal system,†she said.
“Until we got our payment and a shopfit it was an ongoing process.â€
Freechoice mislead franchisees by telling them they would receive additional support from tobacco companies if they signed up.
“TSG is entitled to a declaration that each of the representations constituted misleading or deceptive conduct,†the Federal Court found.
Beynon, who had an unsuccessful AFL career and is former model, built a $16 million property portfolio after became managing director of FreeChoice.
He built on the business started by his parents in the early ’90s.
The matter will return to court next week.
