THE INTERNET is freaking out over a Facebook status that appeared to predict a series of key events with frightening accuracy.
The status, which is timestamped December 27, 2015, makes a number of startling predictions for 2016 including the deaths of Prince, Muhammad Ali and Kimbo Slice. It also says “the world will go crazy over the death of a gorillaâ€, in reference to the shooting of Harambe at Cincinnati Zoo last month.
The social media universe immediately freaked out, with the post – written by Pablo Reyes from Texas – being shared almost 200,000 times.
But um, apparently, you all need to play closer attention to the fine print.
That’s right, you’ve been fooled.
Evidently, all Pablo did was take a status he had written on that date, edit the text, and not update the timestamp.
If you want to try your hand at expert Facebook trolling, you can do it by hitting the clock icon underneath your status box, and setting the date and time earlier.
Speaking to Buzzfeed, Reyes said it bothers him that some people seem to believe everything they see on Facebook is true.
“I feel like people — I don’t want to call people dumb — but I think it’s up to the people to kind of make the decisions about what they hear and what they’re being told,†he said.
“I kind of feel like people are to blame.â€
It’s certainly not the first time the public has believed people might be able to predict the future.
Last year, news.com.au reported on blind mystic Baba Vanga, who reportedly foretold 9/11, the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, the Fukushima nuclear spill and the birth of ISIS also made dire predictions for 2016 and beyond.
