EMERGENCY service workers have been told to prepare for the worst as more wild conditions threaten to impact Australia’s east coast.
Although it’s too early to tell what areas will cop the brunt of the conditions, significant rainfall is likely to fall in large parts of QLD, NSW and eastern Victoria.
Early forecast models suggest there’s a strong chance another “significant weather event†will develop as a number of weather systems combine over the weekend.
NSW State Emergency Service head Phil Campbell told News Corp Australia that volunteers were being told to “be prepared†for the weekend ahead.
“For this weekend, and things are still not certain yet, we are telling our volunteers to think about the fact we could get another weather event, so everything is ready to go,†he said. “It’s prepare, not scare.â€
The Bureau of Meteorology says that many costal areas along the east coast can expect a drenching with up to 150mm falling in some areas in a 24 hour period.
In Queensland, Brisbane is forecast to receive up to 80mm on Sunday with much of the south east looking at similar falls.
In NSW, rain is expected to fall right along the coast with the heaviest on Sunday in the north and on Monday in the south.
The Weather Bureau is currently predicting up to 100mm across Sydney over the weekend and up to 200mm on Sunday and Monday in areas south of the capital.
If an east coast low forms, as many computer models suggest, conditions could become more intense with heavier rainfall and stronger winds.
“It’s shaping up to be an Âinteresting weather event,†the Bureau of Meteorology’s Peter Zmijewski said.
“It’s too early to be certain, east coast lows are not unusual at this time of year.â€
NSW’s new disaster recovery co-ordinator Dave Owen will be briefed by the Bureau of Meteorology and the State Emergency Services today in preparation for a potential return of the damaging storms.
Residents along the east coast are urged to keep an eye out for warning as conditions deteriorate towards the weekend.
