The family was reunited at the Coolangatta Police Station.
The two-year-old who was missing from his Gold Coast home was found after a member of the public saw the wanted 4WD and followed it.
Detective Superintendent Dave Hutchinson said the 4WD they were looking for was seen by a man in Hill St, Coolangatta.
He rang triple 0 and then followed the vehicle to the Snapper Rocks car park, relaying the information to police on her phone.
An unmarked NSW police car was the first on the scene.
A policewoman in that vehicle took the boy from the vehicle. Queensland police arrived simultaneously and took the driver into custody.
The boy’s mother said she would be giving her son plenty of cuddles when he gets home and was relieved that he had been found.
“Police called us ... and they are going to take him to hospital to assess him to make sure nothing happened and he will be returned by police,†she said.
“(We are) very, very relieved.â€
EARLIER: The mother of a missing toddler says the man who is believed to have him is a relative of the child.
The man visited the toddler, aged two, yesterday.
There has been no word from the pair since about 4pm and police have concerns for the child’s welfare.
Police have asked the public to help find him.
The boy’s mother said the relative had played with the boy for about three hours before he disappeared with the child and that he had not taken anything with him: “No car seat, no nappies, no food.â€
“I didn’t think anything of it, I thought he might have taken him to the park,†she said.
“His bike was left and that’s when I knew that he has gone because he never leaves his bike.â€
The woman said the relative had no fixed address and is believed to have taken his own son away when the boy was about seven years old.
As part of the Amber Alert issued by police about the disappearance, every traffic information board on the M1 between the Coast and Brisbane is displaying information about the case.
Family members at the Mudgeeraba home say the relative smelt of alcohol when he visited.
