MOTHER Nature appears to be playing games with NSW after an earthquake was detected off the Central Coast.
The 4.1 magnitude quake struck just after 10am on Tuesday about 100km offshore from Gosford.
Geoscience Australia said it lasted less than a second and was estimated to be at a shallow depth. The Bureau of Meteorology released a short statement confirming there was no tsunami threat.
The tremor comes as residents along the coast clean up after days of torrential rain, gale force winds and huge tides.
Duty Seismologist Hugh Glanville told the Central Coast Gosford Express Advocate there likely won’t be any impact or “damageâ€.
He said there had been 42 earthquakes along Australia’s eastern coast in the past 50 years — almost one a year.
“This area is reasonably active ... Magnitude 4 is starting to get to a decent size.â€
Mr Glanville said it was likely a coincidence that the earthquake followed so closely behind the east coast low that caused so much damage from Friday night through to Tuesday morning.
