IT wasn’t just the lure of the hot local property market that got America’s number one real estate broker Fredrik Eklund excited about being on the Gold Coast.

It was the dolphins at SeaWorld.

He was on the Gold Coast to speak to almost 4000 real estate agents at property guru John McGrath’s Australasian Real Estate Conference and revealed he was looking forward to swimming with the dolphins.

Mr Eklund also managed to break his record at the event by getting all the delegates doing his trademark high kick pose en masse.

“I am not here long enough. I would like to stay longer, I am just here for just two days. It’s so beautiful here and the weather is amazing,” said Mr Eklund, who works at the largest residential real estate brokerage in the New York metropolitan area, Douglas Elliman real estate.

He’s also the star of the hit reality television series Million Dollar Listing New York.

Despite the flying visit he was keen to make sure he had time to visit SeaWorld.

“I am going swimming with the dolphins at SeaWorld. They have arranged a private session and I am looking forward to it as I feel connected to dolphins. I will probably cry.”

The Swedish-born reality TV star admitted he didn’t know much about the Australian property market.

“I don’t know anything about real estate in Australia, I only know Manhattan and I know Stockholm a little,” he said.

Asked if he would consider buying property in Australia, he said he would need to spend more time here.

“We just bought a big vacation summer house in Connecticut, so I feel like I am heavy in property right now. But I enjoyed the flight (to Australia),” Mr Eklund said.

“It wasn’t that long for me. It was amazing, I was spoiled and I told Derek (his abstract artist husband Derek Kaplan) when I landed it was the best flight I have ever had and I never wanted it to end. I could commute to Australia every weekend, I loved it.”

“People always want to know the secret of success. I wrote a book called The Secrets of Selling Anything to Anyone, but the real answer is hard work. When I speak to my brother’s kids, they want everything to happen fast but for me it took a long time and a lot of hard work.

“You should always be yourself which is not always the easiest thing to do. When I came to New York, I made many mistakes because I was trying to copy other real estate agents and I thought if I was high kicking that’s what people wanted to see.

“Selling is all about two parties trusting one another.

“Over the years, I am more me. In my social media, I am me. The more me that I am the more successful I have become. You don’t have to be a clown or high kicking but in sales if people aren’t being true to themselves them they won’t do very well.

“I high kick all the time, I do it when I am happy and when I am sad, I even did it in front of (actress) Jennifer Lawrence the other day.

“People think my high kick is made up but I have been doing it since I was a child, since I was four.

“The world has also changed a lot in the last 13 years, which is lucky for me. It excites me to win though.”

Mr Eklund admits he is far from having perfect balance in his life.

“But I meditate every morning, I did it this morning in my hotel. People find it funny but for me it changed my life since I started two years ago. I also try to sleep a lot, at least eight hours a day,” he said.

“I could never understand people who brag about only getting three hours sleep, I need sleep.”
