GUNS out, buns out, ladies.
It was “a bit much†on Jesinta Campbell (disagree), shocking on Madonna (just a little) and braved by Kendall Jenner at Cannes this week, the trend of barely there and bums out is the new black — so start squatting.
The scantily-clad look has been one of the biggest looks at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney over the past few days, with designer after designer releasing frocks down the runway that barely cover the butts and breasts of their models.
On Monday, Misha Collection opened their show with a scantily clad Bella Hadid, who while having her torso covered, strutted down the runway with just a sheer piece of lace draped over her legs and bum.
The 19-year-old stunner wasn’t the only model wearing the trend. Following her look was a similar gown with a longer hemline and a low cut neckline.
Designer of the stars Steven Khalil, has been a long time advocate of the bold, barely there look, and his runway collection at this year’s Fashion Week included several variations of the trend.
“It’s risqué and a head turner, and sometimes worn with shorts under the skirt,†said Mr Khalil, who has dressed Hollywood’s Emily Ratajkowski, Giuliana Rancic and even the Kardashians for red carpet events.
“We showcase the dresses with a naked look, but a lot of the time they will have a boy short on underneath.
“It’s that exposure of skin, surreal and light that’s the whole feeling of the look.â€
As part of Mr Khalil’s Resort ‘17 collection, the barely-there look is supposed to be “a second skin†that should be worn with caution.
“How the dress is worn is so important. It can be so chic and elegant, but if it’s not done right it can be a disaster,†he said.
“They are harder to wear, there’s no corsetry and it’s overall a more delicate garment. It’s harder to wear. They do take more time to create, it’s all very strategic.â€
Leaving nothing to the imagination, the trend has been a favourite to flash down red carpets in recent weeks.
Model and David Jones Ambassador Jesinta Campbell turned heads with her Camilla and Marc at the 2016 Logies ceremony.
The 24-year-old rocked a custom green body shirt with a wide-webbed, long sleeve dress that was cinched at the waist with a patent leather belt.
KIIS radio host Kate Langbroek wasn’t a fan of the look and posted a shot of Campbell to her 18,000 Instagram followers with the caption: “This cannot be for real. #Logies #beachwear #desperate (for pants).â€
But clearly Campbell was right on the money with her look, with Kendall Jenner wearing a similarly bold Cavalli Couture dress while attending the Cannes Film Festival this week.
Madonna gave the look a go at the Met Gala, flashing her boobs and bum as she walked the red carpet. Her Givenchy ensemble caused quite the stir, and also created a wee problem when she tried to go to the bathroom.
