HAVING been a commentator of the Eurovision Song Contest seven times before, Julia Zemiro has a unique insight into which acts are likely to impress.
The co-host of SBS’s live coverage of the annual spectacle, this year held in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, has spent weeks listening to all the entrants’ singles over and over again.
“I’ve been studying, getting ready,†Zemiro said.
And she’s willing to reveal the five countries she believes will top the grand final leaderboard on Sunday.
“I’ve got a very strong feeling that the top five will include Russia, France, Belgium, Spain and Australia — that’s my pick,†Zemiro said.
Our hopeful Dami Im continues to create buzz with her power ballad Sound Of Silence, which saw her comfortably sail through yesterday’s semi-final.
“I think she’s got a pretty good chance,†Zemiro said. “Not only does she sound amazing but we still have the ‘new’ factor.â€
However Russia’s Sergey Lazarev remains the favourite among critics and bookies, with his electro-pop number You Are The Only One.
“It’s a classic Eurovision song,†she said. “It’s got a good gay nightclub, key change, totally going off quality about it.â€
French contestant Amir is incredibly popular — as is his earworm track J’ai Cherche, which has already racked up 4.5 million views on YouTube.
Zemiro is a fan of Belgium’s Laura Tesoro and her song What’s The Pressure, an energetic dance track.
“It’s a full-on disco number,†she said.
Spanish veteran singer-songwriter Barei is also a strong contender, Zemiro said, with her “incredibly catchy†tune Say Yay!
Im’s betting odds have firmed following Friday’s semi-finals, giving her a good shot at finishing high on the leaderboard on Sunday.
