POLICE investigating the death of a newborn baby have been told by its teenage mother she didn’t realise she was pregnant until she started giving birth.
The 17-year-old Californian gave birth to the boy who appeared to have been born full-term and didn’t appear to have any suspicious injuries.
The child’s lifeless body was found by the teenager’s parents in her bed. It may have been dead 36 hours by the time it was found.
The discovery was made when the parents were making the girl’s bed, according to local media.
Police in Chula Vista, San Diego, told local television station KSWB said the girl told them she gave birth unknowingly.
The cause of death has not been released.
Detectives are working with the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine whether a crime had been committed, according to KSWB.
