LIBERAL politician Christopher Pyne has spilt on when we can expect an election announcement.

The Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science appeared on his political commentary program, Pyne & Marles, on Sky News this morning alongside Labor shadow minister Richard Marles, where he revealed Australia was in for a “very generous present on Mother’s Day”.

Rumours have been circulating over when Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will visit the Governor-General to officially call a July 2 election.

Mr Pyne said his team would be “fired up and ready to go”.

“Far be it from me to give you advice ...[but] we here in the Sturt seat will be ready for all eventualities tomorrow.”

He said it would be a “very generous Mother’s Day present for everyone”.

The announcement was “very likely to be called in the afternoon”.

“The anticipation is killing everybody,” said Mr Pyne.

Yesterday, PM Turnbull affirmed he’ll be visiting the Governor-General in the next few days to call the election.

“I will be visiting the Governor-General shortly and there will be an election on July 2,” he told Sky News.

Mr Turnbull said this would be a critical choice for Australia.

“The question will be who do you trust to ensure that our economy transitions successfully from the mining construction boom to one where we take advantage of the great opportunities of the 21st century,” he said.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said in 58 days Australians would have a choice.

“We might be the underdogs in this election but we have never sought to be a small target,” he told Parliament this week during his Budget response.
