Police are investigating after a man was found by police in a critical condition after allegedly shoplifting from an industrial equipment store in Lisarow on the NSW Central Coast.

About 12.10pm emergency services were called to the store on the Pacific Highway, following reports a man had been detained after shoplifting.

On arrival, officers from Brisbane Water Local Area Command found a man, believed to be aged in late 40s, in a critical condition.

Police performed CPR until the arrival of NSW Ambulance Paramedics.

The man was taken by ambulance to Gosford Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. He is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene has been established and investigations are continuing.

Initial investigations suggest the man was allegedly trying to steal from the store when he was approached by staff and an altercation took place, before he was detained and police were contacted.
