Thanks to our smartphones, we often miss this little man. Here’s one city’s solution to that.

YOU might say one of the basic rules of crossing a busy road is looking where you’re going. Left, right, and left again, just as you were taught in primary school.

HA! You unscholarly fool! This is 2016! With Facebook statuses to update, Instagram selfies to upload and meaningless sassy gifs to tweet, we don’t have time to look at where we’re going!

That’s why German officials have stepped up their road safety game, installing traffic lights right down onto the sidewalk in the city of Augsburg.

The idea is that pedestrians won’t have to tear their eyes away from their phones while crossing, as they’re less likely to miss the lights that are directly wedged into the road beneath them.

At the very least, while randomly sending your mate a crucial, cannot-wait text about the real identity of Beyonce’s arch nemesis ‘Becky’, you’ll save precious milliseconds being able to see whether or not a giant truck is speeding towards you without looking up.

“It creates a whole new level of attention,” city spokeswoman Stephanie Lermen told local media.

And to be fair, this attentiveness is an issue worth addressing.

A recent survey conducted in several European cities, including Berlin, found that almost 20 percent of pedestrians were distracted by their smartphones.

The situation is possibly even worse in the United States. A University of Washington survey found a third of Americans tend to be preoccupied checking their phones at dangerous road crossings.

The idea was actually inspired by a 15-year-old girl who was killed by a tram. According to police reports, she was distracted by her smartphone at the time.

Hmm. Maybe it’s not so crazy after all.
