Your next tattoo?

NBA franchise the Sacramento Kings announced on Wednesday it would be changing its team logo.

The Kings released an official statement to mark the launch of the new insignia, in “honour of the team’s deep connection to a transforming, passionate city.”

“When the Kings moved to Sacramento in 1985, the city was transformed. Today, we aim to do it again,” Owner and Chairman Vivek Ranadivé said in the statement.

“This brand kicks off a new era for our franchise as we move into the most technologically-advanced, most environmentally-friendly arena in the world. As Sacramento becomes the next great American city, this identity honours our heritage while moving us forward.”

Fair enough, teams change their uniforms and logos from time to time.

However in keeping with their “new era” which looks to revolutionise the franchise, the Kings have come up with one of the more bizarre marketing ideas the world of professional sport has seen.

Just hours after unveiling the new logo, the Kings announced in a statement that they would pay for any fan who wanted to get the new emblem tattooed permanently on themselves.

“These new logos represent a new visual identity to signal a new era in Kings history,” the statement read.

“To celebrate, the Kings are purchasing a number of Kings tattoos at select shops free for fans.”

The NBA franchise gave supporters the choice of five different tattoo parlours in which they can select an area of their skin to act as a permanent billboard for the team’s new identity, totally free of charge.

The offer will run on a “first in, first served” basis for a limited amount of time on Thursday (AEST).

One fan has already jumped ahead and got the emblem inked, opting to actually pay for it themselves rather than wait the 24 hours for a free design.

Be quick Sacramento fans, you’ll certainly feel silly if you miss out on this prudent deal.
